The American Dream

by | Jul 2, 2024 | Uncategorized

Most people think the American Dream, in part, is owning a home. For many others it’s Freedom. In my world, we think of them as working together. They both require mature behavior.

When I hear someone say they can’t afford to buy a house, I question what their expectations are. If they pay rent, then they should be able to afford a house. The house might be less than a perfect dream, but it’s a start to building equity and learning financial discipline.

On the other hand, we have people who think they should have everything now, regardless of their budget. They are not willing to earn the privilege.

Scott Peck wrote a book in 1978 titled, The Road Less Traveled. He scribed, “sooner or later, if people are to be healed, they must learn that the entirety of one’s adult life is a series of personal choices, decisions. If they can accept this totally, they become free people. To the extent that they do not accept this they will forever feel themselves victims.”

The Founding Fathers wrote many words of wisdom using their combined years of experience and education. The early settlers had fundamentals of God, Family, and Community, which might be defined as respect for the rule of law and taking personal responsibility.

It is our obligation as a society to remain true to fundamentals, be self-sufficient, keep your dreams alive, save well, live well, and contribute to the betterment of others.

The natural cycle of life is childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Each stage requires acceptance of greater responsibility. It’s important to have a vision of what you want, and a willingness to do what it takes to get it. Waiting for someone to provide it for us is a drain on society and it destroys our confidence. Be proud to leave a good legacy.

So, the American Dream goes beyond owning a house. It means we need to grow up. Feel the emotion, think about it, and act with fundamentals.
